DESIGNING FOR COLUMBUS AND A WINNER!

Here's an interesting question. If you had to design a living room space for one of the world's most famous explorers, Christopher Columbus, how would you decorate the room? Would you take a traditional path and furnish the room with deep scarlet damask drapes and strong baroque furniture or would you go retro modern with a white leather Barcelona chair?  For his first public project in the US, Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi took on this question with his project Discovering Columbus, a provocative installation that incorporates the historic statue of Christopher Columbus with an urban living environment.

The iconic statue of Columbus rises more than 75 feet atop a granite column in Manhattan's Columbus Circle. Designed by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo in 1892, the statue was commissioned to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas. 

What do you get when you climb the 6 flights of stairs to view this art installation? A stylish, modern living room featuring casual groupings of sofas, chairs and coffee tables and modern amenities like a generous flat screen tv. Oh yes, and a 13 foot statue of Columbus himself, standing right in the middle of the room. He seems to fit right into the room, with its cheeky Toile wallpaper inspired by Nishi's memories of popular American culture and well stocked bookshelf.

The installation is both intimate and thought provoking- a great discovering right in the 

middle of Manhattan.
