SLEEPLESS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

We took advantage of the long weekend to visit a few colleges for my son this past weekend. We mapped out an aggressive itinerary-a trip up the New England coast with quick stops in Providence and Boston and finally staying overnight at a country Inn in a quaint New Hampshire town for the night.  We had been to the sweet little town before and knew that there was just one place to stay- a large white colonial B & B with sweeping porches.  So imagine our collective surprise when we got into town at 7 pm and realized that the Inn was not the same one that my husband thought he had booked. At the time, this seemed both very funny and unfathomable-but the Inn he had booked was in Vermont, 6 miles away.

I had a bad feeling as we drove through the desolate New England town and my feelings were confirmed when we pulled up to an old Victorian with a gas pump in its garden.  The car grew quiet and my husband and kids went in to look at the room.  I started plugging the hotel name into my Blackberry and Trip Advisor gave me an earful-"pilly polyester coverlet and polyester sheets", "lumpiest bed I've ever slept on" and "bathroom hasn't been renovated since the "40's". That was just the beginning of a mountain of bad comments- things were not looking good.

I called the Inn I thought we had booked and begged for a room.  There was once left.  As I read my credit card number the kids jumped back into the car yelling "mom, that place was so creepy" "I swear those pictures had eyes following us".  I gave the gang the good news about our new accommodations and we left dodge behind us.

A little bit of drama but it all turned out well and honestly it made for a really good story.

So where would I love to stay on a New England jaunt? My favorite Inn would have to be The Mayflower Inn and Spa in Washington CT. which National Geographic has called "The Apotheosis of a New England Inn." Luxurious accommodations, world class spa, delicious cuisine, amazing art collection and no pictures with creepy eyes!

Do you have a favorite fall destination?

Hilarious! So glad you all found a decent place to sleep. I have never been to the Mayflower but I'm dying to go. Thanks for reminding me, haven't thought about it in a while. Have a great day.

If you haven't been to Blantyre at Lenox, Mass, it's not to be missed. A wonderful Gilded Age mansion restored to perfection as an inn and restaurant.

Cute story - glad it all worked out. This looks like a wonderful place to stay. Where would we be without our BBs?

Great story! Life is full of adventures, right? During the fall, we love going to Woodstock to stay with dear friends who have a home on a small lake. To be nestled in the colorful trees is dreamy! Also, the fall season in the Hamptons makes me quite happy!

That was good story! We've all had those moments in such establishments...you are not alone!!

I would love a fall getaway right now. Once school starts, it's so hard to come up for air!

You've got my wheels turning :)

What a wonderful story and adventure! You will laugh about this for many years to come.
I have been to the Mayflower and it is exquisite. I lived in that area of CT and loved it and it will always be high on my fall destination list. Now that I live in California I don't get back as often as I would like. I'm feeling the need for a CT trip very soon!
