FLIGHT OF FANCY

Mary Norton
I've had a stretch of cocktail parties the past two weeks with nothing new in my closet that made me want to go out and celebrate. That is until I found a burgundy ostrich feather collar that I tried on just for fun, and it looked pretty fabulous. I'm a fairly conservative dresser, so wearing ostrich feathers was going out on a fashion limb for me, but I felt the need to change things up a bit. I found a fitted sleeveless silk top that perfectly matched the feathers, put on my new MAC burgundy lipgloss and channeled my best Zsa Zsa Gabor for the party. My 16 year old daughter, who I've dubbed my personal Anna Wintour gave me a "looks good mom"- a personal best for me. My doorman nodded appreciatively at my new look and murmured how really good I looked. I wondered if that was a reference to the sweatpants and sunglass outfit that I normally wear in the morning waiting for my daughter's school bus.  No matter, I felt pretty glamorous- until the wind picked up outside and I found myself picking feathers out of my lipgloss. Ah, the price of glamour! Anything new and fabulous in your closet for the Holidays?

Yummy, love the Jason Wu. Although when I worked in fashion when I was younger, I remember a season where the designer used a lot of marabou and I thought, "gosh for us tall and not small people it would sure look like big bird!" I think the shoes are more realistic for me!

My friend Pamela wrote a piece for Elle magazine years ago in which she described leaving her job as an editor at Vogue to move to Seattle and go to work for Microsoft, where the dress code was a little... different. Her ostrich feather collar caused quite a stir! I think a little flight of fancy from time to time does one good - I would love to walk into a party clutching the fine feathered friend in the first photo!

I love the idea of feathers... I'm like you - a little on the conservative side so it's hard to show up with feathers! I do think you've picked out some fabulous choices, and if I got brave enough to do the feather thing, one of these picks would definitely work!

I love the added glam o feathers. I'm a bit of a conservative dresser too so I understand what you're saying. You sure gave me a good early morning chuckle about picking the feathers off the lipgloss. I'm sure you were a knockout if you had the nod of the daughter!

Merry Christmas
