FISHERMAN'S BALL-BLUE JEANS PREFERRED

Last week I attended the Fisherman's Ball, hosted by Riverkeeper, a not-for-profit organization tasked with the job of protecting the integrity of the Hudson River and its water. Glen Close presented the evenings "Big Fish" award to environmental advocate and actor Mark Ruffalo and a host of other environmental heavy hitters including Cheryl Hines, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Robert Kennedy, and Yoko Ono were in attendance. Sounds fantastic doesn't it?

The invitation for the evening read "blue jeans preferred" and I immediately panicked. The dress code for this sort of event is usually cocktail chic; a little black dress and a pair of stilettos that hurt my feet even before I put them on.  All this I could do with my eyes closed,  but blue jeans at a dressy event?  I was stumped.  Apparently so were all the rest of the girls at my table.  Text messages were flying days before the event. Will you? Won't you? In the end, we all chickened out on the blue jeans thing, hitting a dressy, funky mode with our attire.(So did a majority of the ladies, with the stylish  exception of Cheryl Hines in chic dark denim.)  The gentlemen of course, were in heaven--not a dress pant in sight as they all swaggered in with their blue jeans and blazers on. Score one for the boys.
The blue jeans theme continued tabletop with a denim table skirt draped with layers of faded Levi's.  My husband commented that they looked curiously like the pair I made him throw out last week.
The guys were clearly enjoying the relaxed, no tux required event as they grabbed cold beers from the icy stainless bucket sitting in the middle of the table.
Containers of pussy willows and wild flowers added to the country chic vibe.
Musician Lyle Lovett and his fantastic band closed the evening out with a set of swoonable music that got the entire room of city folks up and dancing!

Perfect post!! Loved seeing this and loved knowing I'm not the only one that freaks out at weird or not so usual dress codes! No way would I have shown up in blue jeans! Even though I would've been so happy in them! It would've been my dream come true! Just like the men! Glad you shared this! My daughter gets to see a lot of these actors at various events in New Orleans and I love hearing about them! And…it was for a wonderful cause!

What a fun event - love the laid back, yet chic feel. Don't men have it so easy in dressing - a sport coat and jeans...perfection!

Hi Barbara,

What a fun event! I think it's great to get out of your comfort zone every now and then. I might have worn jeans;) It's interesting how women are dressing them up these days. Slouchy boyfriend, cuffed, distressed.. so many options. Your husbands comment was funny;)

As much as I don't wear jeans, the cuffed version with high heels if worn with an outrageous topper is something I could do(:
Sounds like you had a blast, ciao Z
