Designer Celerie Kemble does the chop.
Do you karate chop your pillows? In an effort to "fluff up" a pancake thin down pillow, many people resort to the "karate chop"; puffing the pillow and then chopping down the middle leaving a large V indentation. The karate chop seems to evoke the wrath of some in the design community. In a recent interview, designer Michael Smith said something to the effect that a karate chopped pillow should be punishable by jail time! There is even a Facebook Fan page "Don't you hate it when you karate chop your pillow in half!!" (258 fans).
While I'm not a big fan of the full-blown "chop," I don't think it's an offense that should require jail time. As with most things, moderation seems to produce the best results. A tiny indentation on the top of the pillow leaves a shallow, subtle scoop, producing a fluffy, inviting pillow. And so, the debate goes on-what do you think of the Karate Chop?

I love this post! The great Karate Chop debate! I actually like a very small indentation in my cushions after I plump them. I totally agree I don't like anything over chopped. I love Celerie Kemble's work and have her new book. Have a lovely week-end.. Frances
hi barbara! quilty as charged but in moderation. thanks for your sweet comments...have a great sunday!
Not a chopper at all, but I do fluff a lot. And my husband knows he gets in big trouble if he leans against certain pillows and neglects to re-fluff them!
How funny. I worked in the Design Center in Washington DC while in school in a furniture showroom. I was instructed to walk around regularly and chop all the pillows!!
i am always karate chopping my pillows... makes em looked more loved than tin soldiers standing at attn...
I have been noticing this fad but I didn't realize it had a name!! Very interesting, but I'm on the fence about chopping...
I love your blog - I'm your newest follower!
