LAST MINUTE HALLOWEEN

I've been a last minute this Halloween, putting off making my daughter's Greek goddess costume until last night and leaving our naked pumpkin in need of some dressing up. I saw this shimmery pumpkin at Madiganmade which is entirely made with brass tack pushpins. Gorgeous and easy to do, this pumpkin project should be a snap today!
Love these cocktail napkins! There is no other holiday where you can really tell them how you feel Morticia!

Need a last minute Halloween costume for tonight?  Garden shovel spray painted gold and gold dress and you're a Gold Digger!
No stale Snicker's for your Halloween hostess-these Jacque Torres sweet Jack O Lantern's make the perfect hostess gift.

I couldn't leave you without something to warm you up tonight-my favorite after Trick or Treating drink-

 Black Widow Cocktail
Cream de Cassis
Vodka
triple sec
fresh lemon juice
Pomegranate juice
licorice strings
For two cocktails (or one cocktail shaker): 2 parts cassis, 3 parts vodka, 1 part triple sec, 1 part lemon juice, 1 part pomegranate.

Remember to enter the MacKenzie-Childs Checkerboard give away here!

Happy Halloween!

U.E.S. HALLOWEEN RECAP

I'm sure you are up to here with Halloween-I myself have sworn off Kit Kats forever (or at least until next Halloween) but I had to share with you the fantastic decorations we saw last night on East 78th Street.  Its usually a rather staid block, lined with beautiful Brownstone and Limestone townhouses always meticulous and beautifully kept. But on Halloween, things get a little crazy--the entire block becomes an Upper East Side Halloween Fest-owners dress to the nines and their chic townhouses are transformed into nightmarish mansions. They close the street off (not easy to do in NYC) and everyone goes door to door-(sightings of Brooke Shields and John McEnroe last year).  If you're lucky enough to know someone on the block, you're invited in for a quick cocktail and a nibble--so chic!

IT'S FIVE O'CLOCK SOMEWHERE

 Black Widow Martini
What would Halloween be without cocktails? I know I should be talking about candy or costumes, but really, adults deserve a little more than an errant Snickers or Jolly Rancher left at the bottom of the candy bag. I suggest a very grown up cocktail with a ghoulish twist-just right potent to put you in the holiday mood!

Satan's Whiskers-- love the name and the drink is killer!

½ oz gin
½ oz sweet vermouth
½ oz dry vermouth
½ oz fresh orange juice
2 tsp orange curaçao (curled) or Grand Marnier (straight)
1 tsp orange bitters
Shake well with ice and strain into an iced cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

Nothing says Halloween like a martini

Dirty Eyeball-tini
3 oz Vodka
1 tbsp dry Vermouth
1 tbsp Olive juice
2 radishes
2 Pimento stuffed olives
Fill bar shaker with ice. Pour in Vermouth and shake well. Drain Vermouth from shaker, keeping ice in shaker. Pour Vodka and Olive juice into iced shaker. Shake very well. Strain Vodka mix into martini glass.
With a small paring knife, carefully cut out a center in the radish for one olive. Use a zester to remove small strips of the radishes red flesh, alternating so that strips of white and red flesh are visible. Insert one pimento stuffed olive into radish. Pop eyeball into the Vodka martini and enjoy.

Aren't these Frankenstein napkins and plates fantastic?

VINTAGE HALLOWEEN

Take a trip down memory lane with these fantastic vintage inspired Halloween decorations. Remember when Halloween costumes were made at home?  Paper decorations trumped plastic and Halloween designs were nature inspired.  I'm haunted by the fantastic selection of classic Victorian and retro inspired Halloween decor this year!

I love these Victorian glassine treat bags from Tinsel Trading

HALLOWEEN PARTY

The Mr. Peanut costume my mother crafted from chicken wire when I was 12 was a true masterpiece--with monocal eyeglasses and a dandy walking cane, I looked the part and won first prize at the middle school parade. Halloween in our home was serious business with fabulous homemade costumes and hours of Trick or Treating. Later that night, bags of candy were sorted, traded and carefully hidden from siblings-if you were smart, the loot could last until Christmas.

Halloween is my favorite holiday,  a day when you can be whoever you want to be all in the name of fun. And New York is a city made for the Halloween--with 40 floor apartment buildings and rows of townhouses decorated in ghoulish splendor, the city becomes a huge block party and everyone comes out to join the fun. I've been to some amazing parties over the years. My favorite was an over the top come as your favorite "science experiment gone awry".  My husband made a very impressive Edward Scissor hands and I was his muse, a crazy topiary he tried to cut. It was great fun- the purple and green cocktails were served in beakers and test tubes and the canapes were creepy but delicious.

This year we will attend a friends festive pre-Trick or Treat party which is reminiscent of a tailgate party before the big game. The adults will have a chance to socialize while enjoying savory homemade chili and drinking a cocktail or two while the kids, adorable in their costumes, will run around like mad men in the kid's bedrooms. At seven o'clock we all gather en masse for some serious Trick or Treating.

If you haven't made plans yet, there still is time. Invite a few friends over for an after work Halloween themed cocktail and throw on your Elvira wig--it's Halloween!

Who can resist a Vampire Kiss cocktail?
