FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

It wasn't until Tuesday night while I was sitting on the back porch soaking in the gorgeous August moon that I realized that except for a few floodlights, my backyard was pitch black.  While perfect for stargazing, a dark backyard is problematic for an evening cocktail party.

And so began my search for soft ambient backyard lighting.  Delicate and ethereal, traditional rice paper lanterns always look beautiful. These weather resistant nylon Shoji lanterns have a solar panel on top and LED bulb inside, providing 6-8 hours of light, without any electrical cords.
The Luau portable lamp is a modern take on an old fashioned glass filled with glowing fireflies.  Wouldn't these lanterns look gorgeous running down a walkway or beside the pool?
The soft metallic fabric and unusual shape make these Shoji lanterns a spectacular night time option.

Hamptons chic-a wicker lattice lantern with a handle.  Perfect for tabletop or a beach bash. I may use these in the porch for a soft, romantic glow.

What's your favorite way to light a dark night?

I have a love for tiki torches. The citronella fends off mosquitos who could run an outdoor gathering and the flames look festive and nice agains t a dark sky. We light ours every night when on the back deck dining. Citronella tea lights are also great for the tables. I hope you are enjoying your Hamptons summer that just started!

I love the Shoji lantern you show. But my favourite way would be with the gorgeous torches they use on most Hawaiian islands.I just remember seeing them everywhere in Maui as the sunset. Not sure how easy it would be to replicate that look ;-)

I love the shoji lanterns and love TONS of candles in giant oversized hurricanes everywhere..my favorite kind of light. If you are doing a more festive upbeat type party, with a tropical edge, as Lisa suggested tiki torches can be fun but all depends on the mood you are going for. If you have a pool, I like to put a bunch of floating candles in the pool also...a lovely touch. Enjoy!!

I went for old fashioned string lights. Now every night outdoors feels like a party.

Not the best photo, but here's a link.

These lanterns are very pretty! The greatest part about them is that they are cordless, and can be moved around easily. Great post :)

Nothing is as charming as candlelight... Love the Shoji lantern.. I have my auto candles come on every night at 8 for 5 hours on my patio... don't even have to think about it.

I love the Shoji lanterns as well and like Tina, use lots of hurricanes outside. I've never tried tiki torches but have been dying to. But I think we're all in agreement that some sort of ambient light outside in the evening is a good thing!!

I think lighting in the garden adds magic to a garden at night and paper lanterns always look great for a party!
